Across the street from the old One Hour Martinizing and the Leslie Town Center at 2 East 1st Street, you will find Downtown Comics and you can’t miss it with the big sign and the superhero symbols on the storefront window. The store opened sometime in July and has slowly become the best place in town for gamers and collectors. The store offers everything from collectable comics, collectable trading card games, and all things geek. “If you’ve seen it on the Big Bang Theory I’ve either got it or can get it,” says store owner and manager Garner Loudermilk.
The store moved here from McMinville, where he opened his first store when he was 18, in a 20 by 10 feet building in 1994. He’s owned his own business for four years and been in business six and a half years with the support of his parents and wife.
Downtown Comics is the place to be if you like to play Yu-Gi-Oh and MAGIC. The Gathering with sanctioned tournaments held throughout the week: Yu-Gi-Oh on Thursdays beginning at 6 pm and Saturdays beginning at 2 pm and MAGIC the Gathering on Friday nights beginning at 6 pm. The store also hosts Heroclix tournaments on Wednesday nights at 6 pm. And for Yu-Gi-Oh players the store also boostes a Yu-Gi-Oh Duel Terminal, only one in three in Tennessee: Memphis and Knoxville. And the closest after that is Atlanta, Georgia.
Store goers can look forward to these upcoming events: Mirrodin Besieged Pre-release Tournaments for Magic the Gathering, Saturday, January 29th starting at 2pm. With the release to follow on February 4 at 6 pm. And for Yu-Gi-Oh players the Sneak Peek of the Storm of Ragnarock on February 5th at 2 pm. Garner says the next step for the store is to eventually buy the building and expand the space so more people can come and play.
Store hours are Monday 12 am- 9pm, Tuesday 12am- 7 pm, Wednesday- Saturday 12am- 9pm, and closed Sunday.
