How's Your Sabbath?

Perryn Rice: Associate Pastor - Cookeville First Cumberland Presbyterian Church

By Perryn Rice

My first full-time ministerial position was at the Lake Highlands Presbyterian Church in Dallas, Texas. Our pastor was the Rev. Dr. Bob E. Shelton.

On my first day, Bob asked "What day do you want to have off?" I didn't answer (mainly because I didn't know what to say - stunned). He asked again with this added statement, "except for Fridays. I take Fridays."

So I took Mondays. Bob said, "Good. That's your Sabbath." Bob is still a well trusted friend and mentor - I learned a lot from him.

This was one of the greatest lessons. The Sabbath is a day for resting and recollecting.

But the big question is "how do we rest and recollect?" How do we spend our Sabbaths? Many of us don't call them Sabbaths; we call them "days off."

Sometimes, our days off are really OFF! We can get involved in things that are detrimental to our spiritual growth.

We can spend our time with folks who don't edify the body of Christ but deny it all together. Whereas the Sabbath is created for us, we never should forget who owns it.

"So the Son of Man is Lord even on the Sabbath." Jesus is still Lord on your days off.

We may get days off from labor, but not from our identity. We are still Christians.

How we relax and recollect should still give glory to Christ. Our souls are still witnesses for the Lord, even on our days off.

So, enjoy your weekend and let the Lord enjoy it with you.

Have a Greater Day!
