Stop Nagging God

"Then she said to him, 'How can you say, I love you, when you won't confide in me? This is the third time you have made a fool of me and haven't told me the secret of your great strength.' With such nagging, she prodded him day after day until he was tired to death." Judges 16:15-16

Okay. I know that this is an odd passage to use for our Weekly Word!, but something is brewing here. Of course this is Delilah talking to Samson in an attempt to discover his great strength so she can betray him to the Philistines.

But often when we look at this story, we see ourselves as Samson - "the one being nagged;" rather than Delilah "the one doing the nagging." We're quick to admit that life is filled with those who will nag you to death! Today, I think we need to do a little more confessing than professing. Instead of telling everyone of how there are people in our lives who nag and irritate us to the point of doing things we know we shouldn't, let's talk about how we "nag" God. Instead of accepting a "No" from God or a "Wait" from God, we nag. "Please God, give me the car of my dreams!" "Please, please God make him love me!" "Please, please, please, please God make them ignore my credit scores!"

Any of those sound familiar? In most cases, nagging is a sign of immaturity. Nagging reveals that you cannot accept the immediate truth before you. Nagging and being persistent are not the same. Being persistent means you refuse to give up. Nagging means you refuse to move on. God deserves our commitment and loyalty. God deserves our trust that God knows what to do and how to do. So, stop nagging God. Besides, has it ever worked???
