The Negative Sleep Factor

By Perryn Rice

"Do not love sleep or you will grow poor; stay awake and you will have food to spare." Proverbs 20:13

I really enjoy sleeping in my own bed.  I'm up later than I'd prefer, and our daughter is up later than we are at times; so I don't get to stay in my bed as long as I would like either.

Thanks to parenthood, my days of sleeping late are over!  But I have noticed something that I would like to share about me.  Whenever I do manage to stay in the bed longer than I should, I spend the rest of the day feeling like I'm catching up.  You know, like I've missed something and now I'm behind in either the things I have to do or the things I want to do.  I feel as if I have missed an opportunity to do...something!

As followers of Christ, we are to be productive.  Christians should never be idle, but unfortunately many are.  It's easy to go through life doing nothing - or not making an actual contribution in life to prove that you were here.  Just coast through life or sleep so much that you get nothing done.  Jesus said that we should work while it's day.

Since he's the Light of the world, daylight is a constant.  If we don't take advantage of the opportunity to do something now, we'll wake up later to a lot of missed opportunities.  Someone could have a stronger relationship with Christ today had we simply gotten to it.  So don't get lulled into long television watching periods or going to the movies three times a day or literally staying the bed half a day (or longer).

There's a lot of life to be lived that the Lord wants to get glory for.

Get busy and not lazy.
