Jamey Simmons Sextet Electrifies Crowd

Sunday burned hotter than a hoot n’ poot. But the Jamey Simmons Sextet (a five-person sextet, mind you) burned hotter.

The horns wailed… the bass throbbed… and keyboard blinded… and the drums…. well the drums just about “Buddy Rich’d” (to verb a noun).

Playing at Dogwood Park, the 5 piece band played an hour and a half set of progressive jazz that curdled the sun ball.

Along with Jamey skedaddling the trumpet was Jim White pumping the drums, Jim Ferguson pounding the bass, Joe Davidian throttling the keys, and Don Aliquo hotfooting the sax.

Mr. Simmons is an Assistant Professor of Jazz Studies at Middle Tennessee State University.

As a jazz trumpet player, Simmons has toured with the Glenn Miller Orchestra across the United States, South America, and Japan.

Simmons has made appearances with artists as diversified as the Hornheads, the Temptations, Dave Weckl, Buddy DeFranco, Macy Gray, Jason Alexander, New York Voices, and the JazzMn Big Band out of Minneapolis.

Jamey enjoys spending time with his wife P.J. and three children at his house on a farm near Wartrace, Tennessee.
