Putnam County Health Department-- A Walking Tour

When Director of EMS Services, Randy Porter, first dreamed of his vision several years ago, of a new EMS all-inclusive headquarters, he may not have been envisioning how big it was actually going to be.

A huge superlative that resulted from this was the creation of a new Putnam County Health Department building which continues to be headed up by Lisa Bumbalough.

At the dedication event, Friday night, as Porter introduced Bumbalough, he commented that she would be at the facility when he came in the morning, and would still be there when he left at night.

Bumbalough radiated pride in the facility as she directed the tour and pointed out over and over how the building and layout was designed to promote rapid service, both to help the ailing clients, and to help as many as possible in a given day, and to provide the highest quality of service.

Some of the built in methods for this include color coded wings and floor tiles, a light signal system to communicate needs to nurses, color flags outside of exam rooms, special mid-way wait rooms to eliminate bottle necks, and a plethora of other innovative ideas to help people and procedures to flow.

Also to maximize rapid, face-to-face communication—always a plus in any organization but especially a health care provider—a small, senior staff conference room lies ensconced close to the action, and for all hands meetings is a full scale, fully equipped conference room downstairs next to the training kitchen.

For a combined budget of $14 million, which also include the new, gargantuan EMS building, and the new voting headquarters, this Putnam County Health Department facility shines, both in purpose and design.
