The Upper Cumberland Affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure invites all area churches to join in the fight against breast cancer by participating in “Pink Sunday” on Sunday, April 18. Pink Sunday is a grassroots effort for churches to increase awareness and educate members in their individual congregations about breast health.
The Komen organization will provide free breast health information packets to assist each church in sharing life-saving messages about early detection with their church members. To enhance the day, congregation members are encouraged to wear pink to the service, to decorate the church with pink flowers, and to include Pink Sunday information in the sermon.
Churches are encouraged to be creative in individualizing their events by involving members of their own congregations. For example, at the Cookeville First Presbyterian Church, twin sisters and breast cancer survivors, Jean Balfour Metz and Joan Balfour Christopher, will talk about their breast cancer battles. They are currently gathering “breast cancer answers” to share by listening to other women’s stories about questions that were not answered.
Born in a promise between two sisters, the vow of the Susan G. Komen for the Cure organization is to save lives and end breast cancer forever by empowering people, ensuring quality care for all, and energizing science to find cures.
All churches that would like to participate in Pink Sunday should contact the Upper Cumberland Komen affiliate soon by sending a fax on church letterhead to 931-528-2250 or by calling 931-526-2250 or sending email to nlunn@charter.net. Free materials and assistance with your event will be distributed at a free Pink Saturday Brunch on April 10.
