Over the past year, the Avett Brothers have become one of my favorite band second only to Phish. These bearded siblings from Concord, North Carolina are the greatest thing to come from the Tar Heel state since Michael Jordan.
The incredible success of the Avett’s “I and Love and You” album has taken them from college radio favorites to 2011 Grammy performers (where they shared the stage with Bob Dylan and Mumford and Sons).
As much as I love the Avett’s studio albums, I feel that they pale in comparison to the raw emotion of their live concerts. As if they could read my mind, the Avett Brothers followed up their breakthrough album with a live release.
Live Vol. 3 was recorded in Charlotte, North Carolina to a crowd of rabid home town fans. Live Vol. 3 captures the emotion and joy that the Avetts bring to stage night after night. Banjo driven tunes Paranoia in Bb Major, I Killed Sally’s Lover, and Talk of Indolence will make you want to get up and dance a jig, while When I Drink and Murder In The City reveal the lyrical depth of these acoustic troubadours. With a sound that can only be described as “Bipolar Screamgrass,”
the Avett Brothers Live: Volume 3 is a riot from light’s out to encore.
