What's driving the small explosion of new businesses blooming in Putnam County this summer? In June, 33 new businesses were registered in the County and now, looking back on July, we see that even more were registered in summer's "laziest" month.
Some 45 new businesses put out the "open" or "open soon" signs this month. Is it a sign of a strengthening economy or a weakening one? Are people seeking self employment because employment with large companies is so scarce?
Of those new businesses polled on the subject, some 35% said that they had planned to open a business for a long time. 10% said that they were simply repositioning existing business interests. The balance, over 50%, said that they were taking economic matters into their own hands, so to speak.
"It's better to be actively employed and doing something," said one new business owner. "I'd rather depend on my own skills than put them into someone else's hands for a lot less money than I've made in the past."
