The Upper Cumberland Human Resource Agency (UCHRA) is expanding one of its programs into Cumberland County. Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA) will now be able to assist the citizens of Cumberland County.
The goal of the CASA program is to provide expeditious and thorough advocacy to abused and/or neglected children that will lead to permanence. The CASA volunteers serve as the “eyes and ears of the court” by providing a detailed account of each child’s situation to aid the judge in permanency planning decisions.
“We are glad to have the opportunity to expand this program into other regions within our 14 county area,” Phyllis Bennett, UCHRA Executive Director said.
The foundation of CASA is a multitude of dedicated volunteers. These volunteers are responsible for no more than two cases, remaining with each case until its conclusion. Because CASA is not paid and works on behalf of the child it is reassuring to help these children.
“Our mission is to speak in the best interests of abused and neglected children. CASA advocates help to assure each child a safe, permanent and nurturing home.” Judy Greenwood, CASA Program Director said.
With the expansion into Cumberland County, CASA has the ability to help the children in that area. The program has recently finished its first round of training for its volunteers in order to be ready to fight for neglected and/or abused children in the Cumberland County area.
