The Cookeville Police Department Traffic Division, Putnam County Health Department and the Pilot Club hosted the latest Car Seat Checkpoint at the Chick-Fil-A on Interstate Drive.
On July 7th the checkpoint began at 5:00 p.m. and ended at 7 p.m. Lois Squires, Lillian Derricks and Evelyn Brown from The Pilot Club were on scene to assist the Cookeville Police Department with the checkpoint sign up tables.
The Pilot Club also presented to the Cookeville Police Department Traffic Division a check in the amount of $500.00 to assist in buying new car seats for future car seat checkpoint events. This will greatly help the Traffic Division with making seats available for children in need.
Many different vehicles and family sizes stopped at the Chick-Fil-A to have a Traffic Division Technician assist them in making sure that their car and booster seats were installed and working properly.
One year old Cana Geer smiled and giggled as she watched bubbles being blown in the air to amuse her as a technician inspected her car seat installation and explained to Cana’s parents, Rebekah and Philip Geer the proper car seat operating instructions. Rebekah and Philip stated that getting their child’s car seat checked was something they had wanted to do for some time now. The sign at the Chick-Fil-A and the car seat checkpoint area made it very clear to them as they were passing by that a car seat program was in process.
The Cookeville Police Department views each car seat to insure that the car seat is not on a recall list, making sure that it is in good operating condition and is installed properly. Each technician is certified through the Governor’s Highway Safety Office (GHSO). This GHSO is Tennessee’s advocate for highway safety.
Sgt. James Harris said the Traffic Division takes great pride in this program and really strives to make sure the children are correctly placed in their child restraints to protect them from injury. They also provide installation on a walk in basis at the Cookeville Traffic Substation at Stevens Street and South Jefferson Ave from the hours on 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Monday through Friday.
On behalf of the Cookeville Police Department, Sgt. James Harris wanted to thank the Pilot club for their contribution to help insure this program can help as many needed families as possible and the Chick-Fil-A for hosting this event.
