State Sen. Charlotte Burks (D-Monterey) reminds Tennesseans residents that this weekend, August 6-8, marks the state’s fifth annual sales tax holiday, in which most clothing, computer and school supplies purchases will be exempt from state and local sales tax.
“Tennesseans could always use a break from taxes, especially these days,” Burks said. “The sales tax holiday couldn’t come at a better time for our Tennessee families, especially as children head back to school this month.”
The holiday is designed to occur shortly before or after the start of school, so that families can instantly save on back-to-school purchases. The Department of Revenue estimates that Tennesseans saved about $8 million during the 2009 sales tax holiday weekend.
“Our Sales Tax Holiday not only helps families save on their back-to-school shopping but is a benefit for all Tennesseans, who are encouraged to take advantage of the timely savings," said Department of Revenue Commissioner Reagan Farr.
Exempt purchases include clothing and school/art supplies that cost $100 or less per item, as well as computer purchases totaling $1,500 or less. Business purchases are not eligible.
