Representatives of the Upper Cumberland Affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure recently attended the National Interdisciplinary Breast Center Conference in Las Vegas. Along with professionals from across the country, local Komen affiliate president Eileen Stuber and board members Barbara Jared, RN, NP and Harry Stuber, MD learned about advances in technology and new techniques in providing quality breast health care to patients in our region.

During the conference, Dr. Stuber and Ms Jared successfully completed a training course and passed the testing requirements to achieve Clinical Breast Examiner Certification through the National Consortium of Breast Centers. They are now qualified to teach patients and other health care providers throughout the Upper Cumberland about the correct methods of breast self-examination and clinical breast exam. These important early detection tools can ultimately reduce breast cancer deaths.

Breast cancer is the most frequently diagnosed cancer among women, and the goal of the Upper Cumberland Komen affiliate is to improve breast health through education and advocacy. Almost $100,000 has already been distributed to organizations in the 17-county region through grants this year. More information is available at www.komenuppercumberland.org.
