Cookeville Police arrested a man late Tuesday night for crack cocaine after responding to a call about a suspicious vehicle that had been sitting in a parking lot for two hours on North Hickory Avenue.

When Officer Brandon Tayes arrived, he found Brent Hamby, 27, of Cookeville passed out in his 1998 Toyota Camry.

“The subject had a clear plastic bag with what appeared to be crack cocaine in his left hand,” said Officer Tayes.

When Officer McCurry opened the door to make sure the subject did not need medical attention, Hamby started to hide what was in his hand.

“We ordered Hamby to let go of the possible narcotics, but he threw it into the floor board of the vehicle instead,” said Officer Tayes.

For officer safety, Hamby was removed from the vehicle and placed him in handcuffs.

Hamby was charged with possession of approximately four grams of crack cocaine and 14 Xanax tablets and transported to the Putnam County Justice Center.
