Jail Problem Solving at Putnam County Commissioners' Meeting
The Putnam County Commissioner's meeting on Monday ran for around one and a half hours as several different topics were discussed.
However the meeting was begun on a high note as Upperman High Junior, LaShay Davis was recognized for her award of Double A, Miss Basketball for the entire state of Tennessee. UC Daily News dot com joins County Court Clerk, Wayne Nabors and the County Commission in his congratulations to LaShay Davis. Putnam County Director of Schools, Kathleen Airhart, gave reports on the repairs of two schools, and provided an update on the Jere Whitson School rebuild project. The rest of the meeting was dedicated to the overcrowding of the Putnam County jail. Several ideas were put on the table beginning with County Executive Kim Blaylock providing an update on the GPS ankle bracelets for qualified offenders. Putnam County Sheriff David Andrews addressed how the crime rate has grown beyond expectations in the county. No one had expected the jail to have overcrowding issues for a long time. County Commissioner Gene Mullins then made a presentation of the process by which new land was being sought on which to build a new jail facility. |
