Cookeville Is Building Apartments
84 units being built on East 10th Street. All across the country the eyes have been glued on construction work or lack of it.
On East 10th Street an 84 unit complex is going up between CVS Pharmacy and O'Reilly's Auto Parts. This project is well underway with most of the structures dried in and finishing work is underway.
At this point the plans and permits for the grading and site prep have been issued. The work is underway with sewer lines being installed through the Parking lot of the Northside Shopping Center. Two rows of parking for Bobby Q's, A Taste of China and Subway were unavailable Friday as Elk Mountain Construction was digging and placing utilities access for the proposed apartments. The next step will be getting the permits to begin construction of the complex for the plans already filed with the city. This will make the area's second construction project with the new bank building on Washington between 9th and 10th Streets. The construction of the New Prescott South School should be completed for the start of the next school year. That would be well before the new apartments were ready for renters. That should prevent a traffic gridlock from the school and residents of the new apartments if this wasn't the schools last year in the current building. According to the city information provided, the most active projects are apartments/condos but retail and office construction is underway as well. One of the most noted is the new structure on the old Red Cap site across from Office Max on South Jefferson Avenue. This project is slated for retail but may also be used as office space as well. If this is an indication of things to come, maybe the spring will see increased activity including new home starts. Construction has not dried up in this downturn even though it has been much slower according to city information. |

In Cookeville, the construction slowdown has been more in the new home starts but still some new homes are going up. The office that issues building permits and maintains the code guidelines for the city says the biggest projects are apartments or condos.
Another area where grading and site prep such as those for utilities is also on 10th Street. The former location of Burger Chef and most recently India Palace between Big Star and Prescott Middle School will soon house a three story apartment complex.
