New School Zones For Putnam County Schools

Tools

By Ward Norris

To balance the populations in the Putnam County Elementary Schools and the Putnam County Middle Schools, extensive work has been done over the past months using sophisticated computer programs, according to Director of Schools Kathleen Airhart.

The proposed maps demonstrate the most current plan for the beginning of the late summer 2010 semester. Those working on the maps wanted to emphasize that they are dependent on population in a given area, and thus the lines are subject to shifting—a “work in progress” according to one of the planners.

The goal for school enrollments is to populate to around 80% capacity, allowing 20% additional growth.

Currently here’s how the elementary schools stand, in regards to fullness:

Algood                          97%      Full
Baxter                          108%    Full
Cane Creek               106%    Full
Capshaw                   102%    Full
Jere Whitson             103%    Full
Northeast                     98%      Full
Parkview                       95%      Full
Prescott South              NA
Sycamore                    97%      Full
Uffleman                      82%     Full

According to the plan, the opening of the New Prescott South Elementary School (now slated for sometime in August) should make it possible for all of the elementary schools to have enrollments at or around 80% capacity.

Here is a larger map of the Elementary Zones:

The one exception to this would be Baxter Elementary, which, to date, would still remain 108% full.   Other plans are being worked out for this school.

Currently, the middle schools are not experiencing the same over-crowding:

Algood                        61%    Full
Avery Trace                89%    Full
Burks                          75%    Full
Cornerstone              115% Full
Prescott                       85%    Full

Again, the Cornerstone Middle in Baxter is experiencing overcrowding conditions which are, again, being addressed in other ways.

Putnam County High Schools do not fall under the zoning rules and Putnam County Students are free to attend the high school of their choice.

Cookeville High          86%    Full
Monterey High             59%    Full
Upperman High          83%    Full
