Prescott South Middle School Principal Cindy Taylor held a practice run for the "Foundation for Veteran's Day" program with seventh and eighth grade students today. As the students practiced protocal and learned deportment for the upcoming Veteran's Day event, they also facilitated a special reunion for two sisters.
Karen Fesler's class lined up across the stage, side-by-side, explaining the "Pledge to the American Flag" as each student provided a single sentence description of their assigned part of the pledge.
Student Sarah Graham was part of this line up. And there was a surprise in store for 12 year old Sarah. While Sarah presented her part of the "Pledge," her big sister, 23 year old Amanda Graham, a soldier in the U.S. Army who is on leave from a current deployment, slipped into the end of the line standing next to Ms. Fesler.
When the "Pledge" exercise completed, Amanda, dressed in U.S. Army fatigues, stood at attention and delivered the last recitation on the Pledge.
In a moment, Sarah's head snapped around where she spotted her sister smiling at her from the end of the line, shot across the stage for a giant welcome home hug.
Sarah's mother Tammie Graham said, "Amanda has been away for six months and she's been like a mom to Sarah since she was born. Sarah really idolizes her and we were thrilled that Prescott wanted to do this surprise. Amanda will leave for Korea in two weeks now that she's finished with basic training in Oklahoma."
In the spirit of the moment, the students in the audience gave the sisters a standing ovation. Said Tammie Graham, "I can't believe they would do something like this. The teachers and Principal at Prescott Middle School....they just don't get any better than that."
