BILL HASLAM -- TENNESSEE'S NEXT GOVERNOR

Tools

I think that Bill Haslam will make a fine Tennessee Governor.  I've got his yard sign on display.

We all know that he has been running for Governor for close to two years, maybe longer.  He is currently the Mayor of Knoxville and, yes, he's an owner of Pilot Oil Company--a corporation that his father Jim started from modest beginnings over 50 years ago.

And, yes, his family is also a partner in the business.  Pilot Oil is a big company that owns and operates truckstops just about nationwide.  They may have ownership ties to Luxemburg and perhaps to Iran.  That doesn't phase me in the least.  I couldn't care less that he hasn't revealed all his holdings in Pilot Oil to the public during the campaign.

He has been the Chief Executive of Knoxville, Tennessee for several years.  Just like Governors make good Presidents, Mayors will make good Governors.  Experience as an elected Mayor provides the necessary background to be a Governor.]

Recently several occurrences took place that virtually cemented Bill Haslam's election as the next Governor of Tennessee:

Channel 4, WSMV, out of Nashville sponsored a statewide poll.  The results showed Haslam ahead by 55 percent to Mike McWherter's 24 percent.  There were 19 percent undecided.

Were all those undecided to vote for McWherter, he still commanded 43%--case closed or at least really compromised on.  Small glitch:  They didn't say whether those polled were registered or likely voters.  A 10 percent swing even with a +/- 4% margin of error would still probably not affect the outcome.

*    McWherter tried to imply that Haslam's oil company had ties to Iran--it didn't stick.

*    McWherter has not run any TV ads lately.  Then he announced that he's lending his campaign more money.  He's short on cash and is having trouble raising money.

*    Haslam announced that 105 big-name Dems have endorsed him.

*    Finally, Governor Bredesen lauded the fact that those 105 Dems had endorsed him.  Even so, Bredesen still supports McWherter, but he referred to him (McWherter) in a quote by AP writer Erik Schelzig in the past tense.

There are two statewide debates coming.  I like the sight of that Haslam yard sign.  I may leave it up through January.

UPDATE:     A 4-point negative ad via radio on September 29 that advances 4 points relative to Haslam's policies as Mayor of Knoxville.  It's a smear tactic that doesn't hold water.  McWherter is grasping at straws in an attempt to rescue his failed campaign.
