At the State Level....

In one of the most closely watched Republican primary races so far, GOP candidate Knoxville Mayor Bill Haslam has won with 47.5 percent.

Mr. Haslam was locked in a tight race with Lt. Governor Ron Ramsey and 3rd District U.S. Rep. Zach Wamp. Both candidates had spent heavily and recent polls numbers showed a tight race in the five-way primary.

Mr. Haslam will now face Democrat Mike McWherter, a West Tennessee businessman with a famous political last name.

Mr. Wamp had 29 percent of the vote, while Mr. Ramsey captured 22.1 percent–that with 9 percent reporting.

6th district winners were:    D-Carter    R-Black   (in Putnam County, Zelenik carried the majority for the Republican vote with 33%)
