Early Voting Is Underway

Early voting is underway and will continue through Saturday, Aug. 2.  You can only vote early at the Election Commission Office in the courthouse.  The hours are 8am until 5pm Monday through Saturday.

You must have a valid ID and your voter registration card.

Local offices elections: the county property assessor; the 1st, 3rd and 5th districts on the Putnam School Board; two seats on the Algood City Council; the mayor, city recorder and two aldermen in Baxter; and the mayor and four aldermen in Monterey.

Property assessor is between incumbent Rhonda Chaffin and her opponent, Travis Roberts.

Three seats up for election on the Putnam School Board, Jack Barton, Robert Hargis, Bettye Vaden and Guy Zimmerman are on the ballot for the 1st District seat, currently held by Walter Derryberry, who is not seeking re-election, although Bettye Vaden has announced that she is no longer pursuing election. There is one write-in candidate for that seat, Missy Finley.

In the 3rd school board district, Ray Jordan is running against incumbent Roger Williams, and in the 5th District, Eric L. Brown is running against incumbent Daren Shanks.

In Algood, Ruby Hawkins and Loyd Norris are running uncontested for two council seats.

In Baxter, there are four candidates on the ballot for two alderman seats: Harmon Garris, J.C. Harville, Jeff Herald and Carol McBroom.

Baxter Mayor Jeff Wilhite is the only name on the ballot for mayor, but one write-in candidate has qualified for that office, Anna Krouse.

Baxter City Recorder Stacey Austin is the only name on the ballot for that office, but one write-in candidate has also qualified, Kimberly Webb.

In Monterey, 11 people are on the ballot for four aldermen seats. They are David Delk, Robert Clinton Martin, Ronnie Riddle and Dale Welch in Ward 1; Mark E. Farley and Roy L. Sisco in Ward 2; Sherry D. Calahan, Peggy Matheney and John P. Officer in Ward 3; and Carolyn V. Henley and Jeffrey Hicks in Ward 4.

Monterey Mayor Ken Wiggins is not seeking reelection, and four people are on the ballot for that position. They are Brandie Barnes, Richard D. Godsey, Rebecca Iaquinta and Richard W. Mackie.

Putnam voters will also make selections on the state primary that precedes the state and federal election in November.

Offices that will be on the ballot in Putnam County are Tennessee House of Representatives 42nd District Rep. Henry Fincher and 43rd District Rep. Charles Curtis.

U.S. Congressman Bart Gordon of the 6th Congressional District in Tennessee is the only qualified Democrat on the ballot, according to the Tennessee Election Commission Website, but he will face Independent candidate Chris Baker of Murfreesboro.

Democratic candidates running for U.S. Sen. Lamar Alexander's seat are Mark E. Clayton of Whites Creek, Gary G. Davis of Nashville, Kenneth Eaton of Nashville, Leonard D. Ladner of Chattanooga, Mike Padgett of Knoxville and Robert D. Tuke of Nashville.

Independent candidates for Alexander's seat are Edward L. Buck of Sparta, Christopher G. Fenner of Kingston, David Gatchell of Franklin, Ed Lawhorn of Corryton, Daniel Towers Lewis of Nashville and Chris Lugo of Nashville.

Also on the ballot  will be a list of judges that voters can vote yes or no to keep them.
