Tennessee Technological University had their Spring Graduation. Nearly 1300 men and women graduated this spring from over 60 degrees. CookevilleTimes would like to congratulate you all and wish you good luck on your future endeavours
TTU offers more than 41 undergraduate degrees and 23 graduate degrees, including the M.A., M.S., M.B.A., and Ed.S., as well as the Ph.D. in engineering, environmental sciences, and exceptional learning
TTU's persistence-to-graduate rate (six-year rate for first-time, full-time freshmen who enrolled in Fall 2003) is greater than the average rate of all Tennessee public universities, Tennessee Board of Regents universities and Ohio Valley Conference universities.
Tennessee Technological University was established by an act of the General Assembly in 1915 and opened its doors to students the following year. The university began operation on the campus which had belonged to Dixie College, a private institution chartered in 1909. The purchase of the Dixie campus property and the erection of the two dormitories, East and West Halls, were funded by Putnam County and the city of Cookeville. Since then, the growth of the institution has been closely interwoven with the development of the Upper Cumberland Region.
From 1916 to 1924, Tennessee Polytechnic Institute offered work only on a high school and junior college level. By 1929, however, the Tennessee Board of Education authorized a complete college program, and the first class of four-year graduates received baccalaureate degrees in June.
In 1938 the instructional program was reorganized into two main divisions, the Arts and Sciences and the Professional and Technical Subjects. These divisions were renamed schools nine years later. In 1949 the administrative structure was expanded into five schools consisting of Arts and Sciences, Agriculture and Home Economics (now Agricultural and Human Sciences), Business Administration (now Business), Education, and Engineering. In 1950 the department of Military Science was added, and in 1951 commissioned the first class of officers. The Graduate School program was authorized in lY5~. The five undergraduate schools were designated as colleges-in 1965 when Tennessee Polytechnic Institute gained university status and changed its name to Tennessee Technological University. Since 1972 the university has been governed by the Tennessee Board of Regents. In 1980 the School of Nursing began classes. The School of Interdisciplinary Studies and Extended Education was added in 2001 to develop and implement new baccalaureate degrees in the rapidly developing areas of business and technology. In 2007, the School of Nursing and the College of Agriculture and Human Ecology merged to become the College of Agricultural and Human Sciences.
Representative Ryan Williams was the speaker for the afternoon graduation.
At an early age, Representative Ryan Williams fell in love with team sports - in particular, the game of soccer. He later used that gift to earn a scholarship to play soccer at the collegiate level for Carson-Newman College in Jefferson City, Tenn. This was a significant accomplishment for Williams and his family because he became the first member of his working-class family to graduate from college.
After graduation, Williams immediately took a sales job for an area rug company. After working his way from the lowest-paid position to part-owner of the company, the couple decided to sell the business and move to Cookevi lle in the spring of 1999.
In 2010, he was elected to represent the 42nd District, which includes Cookeville, in the Tennessee House of Representatives. He currently also serves as the director of business development for J&S Construction Company and has worked there since moving to Cookeville. Williams and his wife, the former Abby Bates of Cookeville, have two children.
During his term as a Cookeville City Councilman, Williams used his real estate and leadership skills to find a suitable land option for the new Prescott K -8 campus in South Cookeville. The location he found allowed for better distribution of school traffic around the city. Most importantly, it was within the City's future growth plan and the School Board's land acquisition budget.
Williams also served as the Council's representative to the Planning Commission and in that role has been an advocate for more stringent standards in landscape buffering between commercial and residential property. He also spearheaded the organization of an Architectural Review Board, and developed a new architectural standard for all commercial and multi-family properties. Ryan's support of the Cookeville Regional Medical Center staff and board has facilitated the growth of one of our community's greatest employers and assets.

2010 Caplenor Faculty Research Award
Dr. Sakir Ayik
Excellence and longevity on an international stage earned Tennessee Tech University physics professor Sakir Ayik the university's 2010 Caplenor Faculty Research Award.
Since joining Tennessee Tech's physics department 25 years ago, Ayik's research program in theoretical nuclear physics has contributed greatly to the understancling of the processes that occur when atomic nuclei collide with each other in particle accelerators. He has focused on developing models that help in understanding how the small fluctuations inherent in such a situation can lead to a broader distribution of outcomes.
He has received continuous support from the U.S. Department of Energy, totaling $676,000 since 1989. While at TTU, Ayik has published 57 scientific papers in refereed journals and has made 30 contributions in conference proceedings.
Ayik's work spans international borders; he has collaborated with scientists from France, Germany, Italy, Japan and Turkey. These collaborations have gained him relationships at top institutions, including Oak Ridge National Lab, California's Lawrence Berkeley National Lab, France's GANIL Research Lab, Italy's IFN Research Lab, Japan's Yukawa Research Institute and Turkey's Middle East Technical University.
Ayik has co-organized five Summer Schools on Nuclear Dynamics for graduate students held at Turkey's Gursey Research Institute and has co-supervised nine doctoral theses.
Ayik earned his doctorate in physics from Yale University and a bachelor's degree in physics from Ankara University in Turkey. He serves as referee for Physical Review Letters, Physical Review C and Nuclear Physics A.
The award, first presented in 1984, is the university's premier research award and is named in honor of Donald Caplenor, former associate vice president for research and dean of instructional development who died in 1979.
Outstanding Faculty Award for Teaching
Dr. Daniel Badoe
Well liked and respected by students and recognized by peers for his excellence in teaching, Dr. Daniel Badoe is described as one of the most effective teachers in the civil and environmental engineering department, where he has taught since 1998.
X. Sharon Huo, interim chairperson of civil engineering, says he brings an active learning, multi-disciplinary and hands-on approach to the transportation engineering classes he teaches. For example, she said, his spot speed study requires freshman level students to examine travel speeds on campus and, if students find that those speeds exceed the posted limits, propose cost effective measures to bring speeds into compliance.
Numerous students offered their support of Huo's description of Badoe.
Travis J. Bonar, a 2010 TTU graduate, said, "His positive and supportive attitude helped me personally to succeed both in and outside of class. His lessons are still with me today."
The teaching philosophy of Dr. James Baier, an assistant professor of agriculture at TTU since 2005, can be summed up with one word: sincerity.
"Dr. Baier commands respect in the teaching arena not only because of his many abilities, but chiefly because of his sincerity," said Billye Foster, director of the School of Agriculture, characterizing Baier as a classic example of a "master teacher."
He currently teaches nine different courses each year and advises an average of 52 students each semester. He also serves as faculty adviser for several agricultural extracurricular organizations on campus and consistently earns exceptional teaching evaluations from students.
Professor B. Bruce Greene said Baier works hard to provide students with a proper balance of technical knowledge, critical thinking and practical application of the concepts he teaches.
Outstanding Faculty Award for Professional Service
In addition to successfully maintaining instructional and student advisement duties, Dr. Helen Dainty, an assistant professor of curriculum and instruction, "is committed to improving special education throughout the state, region and nation," according to Matthew Smith, chairperson of curriculum and instruction.
Dainty serves as director of the Special Education Summer Institute for the College of Education, maintains membership and participation in various other relevant professional organizations and undertakes a rigorous research agenda.
College of Education Associate Dean Pat Jordan said, "She is a leader who does not hesitate to be the hardest worker at whatever she undertakes."
Dainty has developed and supervised a tutoring service at TTU through the Student Council for Exceptional Children and the Summer Institute. This service has provided more than 4,500 hours of free tutoring services for local children.
