COOKEVILLE, Tenn. - LaDarious Weaver'ss 3-pointer as the buzzer sounded lifted Tennessee State to a thrilling 73-72 victory over Tennessee Tech Saturday afternoon in Eblen Center.
With the win, TSU (9-11/6-5 OVC) played leapfrog and jumped ahead of Tech (9-13/6-6 OVC) in the Ohio Valley Conference standings.
Tech, which came into the contest in a tie for fourth place, could find themselves anywhere from fifth to ninth place when the dusts settles later Saturday night in what's shaping up as one of the closest races in conference history.
Tech had grabbed a 72-70 lead with seven seconds remaining on two free throws by Anthony Fisher, setting the stage for Weaver's game-winner.
Gerald Robinson raced the ball downcourt, was stopped at the top of the key by the Tech defense, and fumbled the ball. When he picked it up, he found Weaver alone on the left wing.
The Golden Eagles were within one point, 68-67, after Amadi McKenzie made one free throw with 1:29 remaining, but TSU kept its lead when Price hit two free throws with 1:09 to play.
Robinson led TSU with 27 points, Bruce Price had 13 and Reiley Ervin added 10. Weaver finished with nine points, including three 3-pointers as the Tigers shot 50 percent (10-for-20) outside the arc.
Senior Amadi McKenzie, with a perfect 7-for-7 shooting performance, topped Tech with 19 points as Tech hit 50 percent (24-for-48) from the field.
