Wal-Mart Stores Buying/Selling Local Produce

Tools

Wal-Mart has stepped up its effort to buy and sell local produce in its stores.

Glen Gabardi is the vice president and regional manager of Wal-Mart. He said Tennessee Wal-Mart stores are one of the first out of 10 states to roll out the initiative.

Gabardi said the initiative supports local economies, provides more fresh food offerings and cuts shipping costs.

Locally, a Wal-Mart employee said they have purchased and sold locally grown Tomatoes and other produce products from a local provider.

Area farmers are in general agreement that having more Tennessee grown produce in Wal-Mart stores is a win for everyone.

Wal-Mart reports that the partnerships with local farmers have grown by 50% in the past two years.
