People are still in shock about yesterday’s deadly shooting in the Fort Hood, Texas.

Maj. Nidal Malik Hasan, a mental health professional who helped the soldiers to deal with the stress related situations, is suspected as the gunman who killed 13 people and left 30 wounded.

Hasan, a Virginia Tech medical graduate served his entire professional career with the military and was about to be deployed in Afghanistan, which he reportedly opposed. He also tried for an early discharge of service, but was not allowed.

Upper Cumberland residents are eager to know what actually set off Hasan and worried whether military bases are safe.
Questions still remain unanswered whether this was an act of terrorism or just a soldier’s stress mismanagement.

The Fort Hood, Texas, incident triggered an emotional outrage among the citizens and leaders. Some felt sad and expressed their sympathy to the families of the slain.

Rep. Henry Fincher said, “These violent random attacks, typically by somebody who is being unstable going and killing people, seems to crop up from time to time. This particular incident seems to be a directly terrorism-related act.  It’s a sad day.  It is a national tragedy and my heart goes out to the families.”    Fincher indicated that he hoped that justice was swift and in keeping with the gravity of the crimes.

Rep. Fincher said these kinds of incidents are almost unpredictable like natural disasters you don’t know when that could occur.
Rep. Fincher said we are great nation because we are open and one of the risks of being open society is being vulnerable to the attacks and said we have to be more vigilant to protect our families.

Is this significant act because it happened in the military base?

“No, it doesn’t scare me more than it does happen in our society. It’s tragic; we don’t want it to happen on our military base. They don’t carry arms in military bases.”

Fincher said that the criminal who committed this act must be swiftly tried and swiftly executed.
“He will have a chance to prove it (innocent). And if he is convicted, they need somebody tie the rope I’ll help.”
Rep. Fincher allayed the fears of more such acts in future. He said it was a random act and he does not foresee any such actions in future.

Congressman Lincoln Davis said in a brief statement, “What happened at Ft. Hood was a tragedy of grand proportions. My thoughts and prayers, along with those of my constituents, are with the families that lost loved ones and with those who were injured.”
